Welcome to discovering the wonderful island wilderness that is West of Ireland, flung out into the Atlantic Ocean and shaped by the sheer force of the sea, Connemara’s islands are spectacular remnants of life, long lost in other parts of Ireland. Punctuated by historical sites, wild rugged landscapes these dramatic islands, the geology and natural history of the region are in a class of its own. Inis Bo Finne (Island of the White Cow) lies seven miles off Galway’s north-west coast. The island is five by three miles long and the main activities on the island today are tourism, farming and fishing. There are five villages: West Quarter, Fawnmore, Middle Quarter, Cloonamore and Knock. Several safe sandy beaches strewn with shells and with crystal clear water make swimming and snorkelling a joy. The islands waters make for spectacular diving.
Inishbofin is a breeding area for many species of birds. For the adventurous there are mountain walks, hill climbing and excellent shore angling. Inishbofin is a centre for traditional Irish music and song with its own Ceilí band. The island was inhabited as far back as 8000 – 4000 B.C. The first documented history of the island dates from early Christian times. Sailing into the harbour you will see Cromwell’s 16th Century Barracks, which was used as a prison for catholic priests from all over the country after the English Statute of 1585 declared them guilty of high treason.
